David N. Lopatka, CFA, AACI, MRICS
President and Chief Executive Officer
Since 2002, David Lopatka has been an active and prominent member within the realty advisory industry, serving at the highest executive levels. David is responsible for providing senior level guidance and oversight of core functions central to Canadian Urban’s long-term vision. His primary areas of focus include: strategic planning, finance, board management, raising capital, performance optimization, and asset/ property management.
David is a CFA Charterholder and holds the AACI, P.App designation from the Appraisal Institute of Canada, as well as the MRICS designation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. He received his Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta, and has a Diploma of Urban and Land Economics from the University of British Columbia.
Jay Hamilton, CA
Chief Financial Officer
Jay Hamilton has nearly two decades of experience in the financial and professional services industries. With a focus on people, technology and processes, he provides a wealth of strategic, operational and financial leadership to Canadian Urban.
Prior to joining Canadian Urban, Jay served with SCM Insurance Services and Bessemer Trust Company. He is the current Treasurer and Director of the University of Alberta Golden Bears Football Alumni Association. Jay is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta.
Linda Tait, MBA
Senior Vice President, National Asset Manager
As a key member of Canadian Urban’s Investment Team, Linda Tait’s primary focus is on asset management. She is responsible for strategy, performance analysis, leasing, financing and property management. Linda leads Canadian Urban’s Research and Analysis department, and is actively involved in the Real Estate Acquisition program.
Linda has over 25 years of experience in commercial real estate. Prior to joining Canadian Urban in 2004, she was a Senior Account Manager with a Canadian investment manager, and was actively involved with the cash flow modeling leading up to the launch of a Canadian REIT – as well as MD&A reporting and ongoing investment analysis post IPO. Prior to this, she was a Financial Analyst with Oxford Properties and was engaged in cash flow modeling of various joint venture projects.
Linda received her MBA from the Schulich School of Business at York University in 1999, with a dual concentration in Real Property and Finance.
Vice President, Property Management
Tilda Ferguson leads the National Property Management platform at Canadian Urban. She guides a dedicated and highly experienced team located across Canada. Key services include facilities management, tenant coordination, lease administration and construction management. Tilda’s expertise is built upon over 35 years of experience across all realty asset classes.
Sean Demsky, MSc.Pl.
Vice President, Acquisitions and Dispositions
As a member of our investment team, Sean Demsky manages an active real estate portfolio and leads a team of highly trained professionals. Guided by nearly two decades of commercial real estate experience, he oversees all aspects of the acquisition of new properties and disposition of existing assets. Core responsibilities include: sourcing new deals, contract negotiation, financial underwriting, board and client presentations, and the coordination of the transition process from the purchase or sale of a property to our Asset and Property Management groups.
Before joining Canadian Urban, Sean was a Senior Real Estate Analyst and Sales Representative with Cushman & Wakefield’s Investment Sales group in Toronto. Prior to this, he worked in New York City as Vice President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s Asset and Property Management Department.
Sean holds a Master of Science Degree in Urban and Economic Planning from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of British Columbia. He is also a licensed sales representative in Ontario and an active member of NAIOP and TREB.
Derek Janke, CGA
Manager of Fund Reporting
Derek Janke, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from Canadian Urban’s Finance department to his new role in Investments and Asset Management.
Derek started at Canadian Urban in 2000. Over the years he has worked in a variety of roles including corporate, residential and commercial property accounting.
Derek is a graduate of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton, where he received his Bachelor of Applied Business Administration – Accounting. In 2013, he received his CGA designation.
